Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would be moving to a foreign country to live, let alone a country in the Middle East. Over the 2009 Christmas and New Year’s holidays, my husband Roger and I discussed what we wanted the next part of our life to be like. He thought that before retiring, he would like to do one more airport project but only if he could find something very interesting. I half-jokingly agreed that would be fine but could he try for an exotic location? As usual, Roger came through and soon we were headed to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. This blog is a recap of our "leap-of- faith" wanderings around the Middle East and beyond. We joyfully share these expat experiences.

Ann at Contemporary Retirement has a question for you: What’s lighting you up today?

Sightings at 60 is having a lively discussion about whether or not to redo the kitchen. The kitchen is kind of old and needs some work. But it’s not like the old days when a renovation added value to your home. He’s reluctant to sink yet more money into a house that just keeps going down in value. So can a renovation still be considered an investment, or is it just another expense that’s going to suck our hard-earned savings down the drain?

Can one be fashionable and socially conscious at the same time? Livia Firth, wife of Colin Firth, says yes, as she wears Carole Naim’s designs on the red carpet. Beshtar’s fashion designs — many made from the ubiquitous burqas — makes it possible with their stunning designs that support Afghanistan women. Listening is a skill that sometimes needs to be developed, says Midlife Musings. There are so many variables when it comes to how people communicate.

Do you think that the ratio of good restaurants to bad is consistent throughout the world? The Accidental Locavore was pondering this idea the other day. For every great restaurant in Paris is there a number of equally crummy ones?
